DualHead2Go (Digital) Problem

Postby Snipe65 » Sun Jul 22, 2007 12:34 am

Hey!
I've been ripping out my hair lately trying to get this thing to work. Some details first:
OSX 10.4.10
MacBook Pro 128MB x1600, 2gb ram, 2.0ghz core duo
Bought a DualHead2Go Digital ed, and I'm trying to get 2 24" monitors to work with it. (2405FPW RevA01 and 2407WFPb Rev A00)

Now, the dualhead2go claims it does 3840x1200 58hz.

Once I installed everything, and hooked it all up, when I turn the PC on it just tells me that It can't display the image

I found a little tool SwitchResX, and I created custom resolutions

3840x1200 51HZ <-- this one works, but the text is really really grainy
3840x1200 55HZ
3840x1200 56HZ
3840x1200 57HZ
3840x1200 58HZ

Now, when I try any of the other ones 55hz and up, the 2405 works perfectly fine, but the 2407 WFPb is being a little stuck up to put it nicely ;)

To give you an idea of exactly what its doing :

Now, i'm not an expert on monitor resolutions or anything like that, so I have no idea why one of the 24s would be displaying everything perfectly fine, and the otherone would be displaying all that pink/grey ish ness.

If anyone have any idea, I would be very grateful :)

Matrox's support lines aren't open on the weekends so I'm a bit frustrated waiting until Monday :(

Thanks

Well, the problem with the DH2Go and TH2Go appliances is, that they don't
require a driver as they're only some kind of monitors for the graphics
card attached to them.

So, to gain the desired resolution, your graphics card needs to support it
too. 3840x1200 is a really high resolution that your card might not support
on a single head (what graphics card is built into the MacBook Pro?).

I'd start with lower resolutions just to see where the limits are, e.g.
2048x768 or something like this.

As I never had my fingers on such a MacBook, I don't know if OSX also
uses Xorg as X server. If so, a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log could be helpful
to debug your problem.

So after talking with Matrox tech support, they've come to the conclusion that I needed to update the firmware on the Dualhead2go.

Now, the 2407 isn't displaying crazy pink/grey lines.

The only problem is to work out is to get both monitors to work with the 3840x1200 58hz option.

Currently they are both running at 1680x1050 58hz

And the MacBook Pro with the ATi x1600 does support dual 24" monitors :)

We'll see what they say tomorrow.

Is this firmware publicly accessible? If so, could you please post the
download link for future reference?

I guess you mean that both monitors work with 1920x1200, right?

Maybe the following mode line calculator might help you?

x1600 seies does not support dual 1920x1200 or 3840x1200 as stated by their website... all x1xxx series have this limitation.

The new x2xxx series will support it, thou

I thought that it might be a limitation of the ATI card... Any updates on this
one?

G'day Snipe65,

I am seeing this exact issue on both of my Dell 2407 monitors. I have contacted support, but so far haven't heard anything. Are you able to point me in the direction of the firmware upgrade you mentioned ?

If you can't, could you please provide me with the ScreenResX settings you are uing to get 1680x1050 working, I tried for ages last night and couldn't get anything working.

Cheers,

David

Wow, I've had quite the adventure.

First off, my apologies for not replying faster. However, the dualhead2go was finally RMAed after the firmware upgrade as it wouldn't give options for the 3840x1200 resolution. So I sent it over to NY.

I'm a little hesitant giving out the firmware at this point as I do not know whther the firmware messed up the dualhead2go or if it simply was a faulty box to begin with.

Once I hooked up one of the external monitors to my macbook pro, I recieved odd pixel distortions. After rebooting, and using the computer for some time, the same pixel distorutions return, generally a small line of several pixels that were off color.

After hooking up the second monitor, the samething was also happening. After just using the laptop monitor, again the samething was also happening.

Now, being a paranoid person I've got an external harddrive thats always a revision back of the current OSX version (I was using 10.4.10 on the pro, and the ext hd was on 10.4.9)

After booting off the external, the same random pixel distortions arose.

So I formatted the computer.

Expose would still freeze (I was also having a problem with expose) and the pixel disotortions would still arise.

So now I was starting to get annoyed. I went to the local macstore, showed them what was happening etc... after running a few tests, they guys told me that I wasn't the first person to have such issues, and it was the logic board on the mac, it was defective.

Funny thing is, it was 13 months after I purchased the macbook pro, so my warrent was expired. And no, I didn't buy the extended warrenty plan from Apple.

So, replacement of the logic board $1200 CDN.

I would be pretty mad at this point, however theres a nice little clause (if you ever read the fine print agreement) that if you buy anything with a visa card, they automatically give you an extended warrenty of up to 1 year....Not many people know this, so the repair was covered by visa, I just filed a claim with them recently to get re-imbursed.

So my new dualhead2go came in the mail, and today I finally picked up the macbook pro, hooked everything up and voila, it works almost as it should.

Text on the dual 24's is still distorted, by that I mean that for every character a pixel to the right of it there is a shadow, which makes the text appear fuzzy.

On Matrox's site, there is a claim that the dualhead2go digi edition does 3840x1200 @ 58hz, however it only does 57hz currently, which maybe a reason why the text is a bit fuzzy.

So, I'm off to give matrox tech support a call, and see what they have to say.

Hopefully I can get this worked out

Cheers

I finally got a Matrox DualHead2Go at work (well, my colleagues got one) but
unfortunately it's only the analogue edition.

Will try to get my hands on this stuff to see how it fairs.

So, I did grab the cables and converters dvi to vga, but it won't display 3840x1200, the max it does is 3200x1200.

So ya, still no solution to my problem. I'm currently uber busy @ Univ.

Once I get some time, I'm going to try and solve this issue with Matrox. I'll keep you guys posted :)
