matrox p690 not detected

This forum is for all Parhelia based cards (Millenium P650, P690, P750, QID, Parhelia 256, APVe, ...) that need the mtx driver to run properly.

matrox p690 not detected

Hi folks!

I've installed Hardy on a system with an on board Intel card and a matrox millenium p690 pci card. After that i've installed the matrox driver from matrox.com. Now i should only reconfigure xorg and choose the new driver, but the problem is, that ubuntu always takes the driver for the on board card.

Does someone have an idea how to solve this problem?

Is there an option in the BIOS of your computer to change the order of the primary graphics adapter? If possible, try to make the Matrox card the primary graphics adapter in your system and if there's no such option in your BIOS, please attach your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.

Wow, that was a quick reply. The BIOS is set to use the PCI card first, but it doesn't seem to work.
I'll post the content of the two files tomorrow morning.

Please try the attached configuration file instead of your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If something doesn't work, please post the generated /var/log/Xorg.0.log file again (should look different then).

OK, i've copied your xorg.conf over mine and restarted xorg. now i have the propper screen resolution of 1680x1050 instead of 1280x1024, that's nice.
But the colors are not set properly, i guess 256 colors.

OK, that looks much better now. Please try attached configuration file, I forgot to specify the default colour depth in the previous one.

Additionally: Do you see the Matrox splash screen when your X server starts up? If so, what colour does it have? purple or blue?

Is the second monitor of the same type? How is it attached to your grahpics card? Via DVI or via an analog VGA HD-15 connector (the blue one)?
What setup would you like to have? A mirrored setup (both screens show the same content) or a stretched setup where your desktop is stretched across both displays?

What resolution do you want to have on the second monitor?

Both Monitors are Dell 2208 WFP with a resolution of 1680x1050 and are both digital. I would like to have a stretched setup (is it also possible to have the taskbar only on the first and just shifting the programs? Would mean to make it possible to maximize the windows on both screens).

The taskbar configuration depends on your settings in KDE (or whatever desktop manager you're using). As both screens repesent themselves as distinct viewports to your X server, it usually treats them as separate screens joined together horizontally.

So, maximizing a window will only maximize it to the physical monitor it is currently placed on, although, you can change that behaviour if you wish to and besides that, it's still possible to manually maximize the window over both screens, so usually, the setting I have chosen for you in the now attached configuration file should be a good choice for you.

Please give it a try and report back whether it worked or not.
