Xorg does not load sucessful anymore :-(

This forum is for all Parhelia based cards (Millenium P650, P690, P750, QID, Parhelia 256, APVe, ...) that need the mtx driver to run properly.

Xorg does not load sucessful anymore :-(

Postby csp » Sun Apr 20, 2008 11:55 pm

Hi,

I am using my P690 on Ubuntu 8.04 RC 64bit with latest matrox driver v1.4.6.

2D worked fine but glxgears failed. So I had a look on this forum and the I copied libglx etc.

An after this X does not start anymore.

The last lines in Xorg.0.log are:

Code: Select all
   [52] -1   0   0x0000ff00 - 0x0000ff3f (0x40) IX[B]
   [53] 0   0   0x000003b0 - 0x000003bb (0xc) IS[B](OprU)
   [54] 0   0   0x000003c0 - 0x000003df (0x20) IS[B](OprU)
(II) MTX(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000
(WW) MTX(0): Cannot read colourmap from VGA.  Will restore with default
(WW) MTX(0): Cannot stop Matrox xform.
(WW) MTX(0): Error occured while starting the Matrox xform.
(II) MTX(0): Cursor Aperture location 0xbc0000.
(II) MTX(0): Cursor Surface location 0x7f60000.
(II) MTX(0): Parhelia device started.

So I think anything "hangs" on my box. But I do not know how I can solve this problem
How can I get more information about the reason of troubles?

Thank you!

CSP

PS:

on dmesg I found:

Have you tried starting your X server manually from the text console using the "-verbose" command line switch?

Code: Select all
X -verbose

This should usually provide more output and you should at least see a backtrace of the error, etc.
If this doesn't help or you're unable to look at the console afterwards, you might want to redirect all output from the above command to a file, e.g.:

Code: Select all
X -verbose >/root/X.out 2>&1

The file /root/X.out should then contain all relevant information and if it doesn't, the last option is to `strace` your X server to see where it's failing.

Code: Select all
strace -f -o /root/X-trace.out X

The generated file /root/X-trace.out will get _VERY_ large so be careful when attaching it to your next message (usually, `gzip`ing it before uploading should work well).

Hi tuxx-home,

here are the requested files:

suspect: crt is black but OSD says 1280x960x85Hz.

I installed the P650 again and Xorg starts fine. Maybe a P690 bug?

Update: Sorry, this was not correct. I reinstalled mtx-driver-pack including xorg.conf. And now VESA-driver is used and works. But if I try to load mtx it fails again... Interesting is, that in this case the CRT is black but his OSD says 1600x1200x70Hz. But no image, just black!

Same problem for me... is there any progress?
(I use a P650e here)

Yes, of course. It is still pending. With Both my Millennium P690 LP PCIe 16x 256MB and my Millennium P650 PCIe 128MB.

There is no solution. Can anybody help us?

PS: My Millennium G450 is working fine on my "backup-box" which is now my primary again. Even glxgears are running well ...

Today I downladed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS AMD64 an installed it on an empty harddisk. After this I installed the mtx-Driver. It does not modified the xorg.conf although I answered with yes...

VESA ist working, but if I want to load the mtx driver the screen remains black.

tuxx-home, do you need any other information?

THANK YOU!

I have the same problem with both 64-bit and 32-bit Ubuntu 8.x.
I saw that the file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libmtxcfg.so exists (symbolic linked to /usr/share/matrox/current/libmtxcfg.so).

Nevertheless, I saw Xlib error message "Xlib: extension "MTXCFG" missing on display ":0.0".

Official 1.4.6 driver fails miserably in trying to auto-configure your X server, at least that's what I experienced when trying this driver version on my system.
After installation it asks you if it should configure the X server and if you let it do so, mtxwizard (the tool that's called for this job) segfaults or simply doesn't work.
You need to manually enable the MTXCFG extension by adding the following line to the Modules section of your xorg.conf:

Code: Select all
Section "Modules"
   [...]
   Load "mtxcfg"
   [...]
EndSection

Please note that this extension is only needed if you want to make use of the new `matroxconfig` tool that gets shipped with 1.4.6.

@csp:
I saw in your trace that you might have memory problems (there are several -ENOMEM errors at the end of your trace), so maybe it makes sense to increase the vmalloc space of your kernel.
Please show me the output of `dmesg | grep MEM` after a fresh boot of your system.

As to the vmalloc stuff, please have a look at this FAQ entry: [http://forum.tuxx-home.at/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=34]

@all others:
Please check your system for the above mentioned errors too and get me your log- and configuration files.

Here is the information you asked for, tuxx-home...

I set vmalloc first to 256m (X-trace-2.out) and than to 1024m (X-trace-3.out).

dmesg | grep MEM
Code: Select all
[   36.938011]   MEM window: efc00000-efcfffff
[   36.938020]   MEM window: efe00000-efefffff
[   36.938034]   MEM window: ed800000-eeffffff
[   36.938061]   MEM window: ed800000-eeffffff
[   36.938088]   MEM window: ef600000-ef6fffff
[   36.938101]   MEM window: ed800000-ef7fffff
[   36.938110]   MEM window: efb00000-efbfffff

Thank you for your assistance!

*SMILE*

If memory = 2GB --> Xorg starts up successfully; glxgears are working, ("MemTotal: 2062164 kB")
If memory = 4GB or 6GB or 8GB --> System fails like described above.

What can I do to get it working with 4gig and more?

Regards

This might be a explanation.
I also use 4GB here... if i find the time, i'll give 2gb a try (and i will create the logs tuxx-home asked for)

Thanks for the information,
Niko

@Niko_K: Can I please see your `dmesg | grep MEM` output?
There should be lines containing information about how much low and high memory your system is configured for, e.g.:

Code: Select all
tuxx@thor:~$ dmesg | grep MEM
126MB HIGHMEM available.
896MB LOWMEM available.
  MEM window: f8000000-f80fffff
tuxx@thor:~$

If this is not the case: Do you have high memory support enabled in your kernel and if so, is it CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G or CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G?

BTW: I found a similar topic which has been posted some time ago here, please have a look:
