Matrox QID-QDA8X128 with Kubuntu 6.06 or SUSE 10.2 help!!

This forum is for all Parhelia based cards (Millenium P650, P690, P750, QID, Parhelia 256, APVe, ...) that need the mtx driver to run properly.

Matrox QID-QDA8X128 with Kubuntu 6.06 or SUSE 10.2 help!!

Hello,

Please can you help me. I am having difficulty getting the QID Matrox driver working on Kubuntu Dapper 6.06 (preferred) or SUSE Linux 10.2.

I can install successfully on Kubuntu Breezy 5.10 with a respective older driver.

I have now installed the latest matroxdriver_mtx-x86_32-1.4.4.4-installer.run install file, which was supposed to work with SUSE Linux 10.2. No errors were found in the install process but the XServer simply fails to start on Kubuntu Dapper or SUSE 10.2.

Can anyone please give me some advice. I really don't want to go back to Ubuntu Breezy 5.10.

The X0rg.0.log and also my xorg.conf


Please, for future posts, attach log- and configurationfiles to your postings
instead of posting them inline. Attaching files increases readability a lot
and makes my life easier!

What setup do you want to achieve? Dualhead or Quadhead? Merged or
independent?

Your configuration file looks like quadhead, is that right?

Yes, that's right - Quad head. Actually I would like to get this working initially with any configuration. Even with a single monitor xorg.conf, I still cannot get this matrox board to work. I have spent a lot of time on trying various xorg configs including the samples supplied but with no success.

This has only been a problem since going to an updated X server version - which is present in the newer versions of Linux. I have no problems with running any xorg.conf types on Kubuntu Breezy 5.10, but no luck with anything newer. The X Server in the newer X Servers refuse to find a workable. I have tried multiple types of monitors CRT and LCD but no luck.

The install file runs with no problems or compilation errors. I just do not know what could be wrong as it is so seemless to get running on the earlier version of linux.

Your Xorg.0.log file doesn't seem to be the current one:

But anyways, I'm having a look.

The first thing that catches my eye is that your xorg.conf is missing the
Xinerama option. Please add the following section to your xorg.conf:

For the given resolution (1280x1024), there seem to be timing issues that
prevent this resolution from starting up properly:

(II) MTX(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (hsync out of range)


Please verify, that the timing values for HorizSync and VertRefresh in your
monitor sections are correct according to the manual of your displays.
Do you use four identical displays, or are they different?

That's also the reason for the following error from HALlib:

And as a fatal server error isn't really a good thing, your X server doesn't
start up at all.

QID Kubuntu / SUSE Help?

Okay, I have added the Xinerama option, still no change. I checked the manufacturers specs for the Samsung 713N - 17" Horizontal Sync Range 30 - 81KHz, Vertical Sync range 56 - 75 Hz. Native recommended resolution 1280x1024. I have four of these but only the first two are connected at present for testing purposes. Even when all four are connected - still no success.

Normally I see the boot up text appear and then the video dies when it tries to load the X Server - no Matrox splash screen occurs.

I have now rebuilt a new Kubuntu 6.06.1 dapper machine and installed the latest Matrox driver (matroxdriver_mtx-x86_32-1.4.4.4-installer.run), again no problems were found "installing" the drivers. I made up a new xorg.conf with the change you last recommended. Attached are both files xorg.conf and the resulting Xorg.0.log created during video initialization (boot up). I did the modprobe of the board and the lsmod to show
the loaded modules, everything was fine.

I am running out of options on what more to try.

According to your logfile, the desired resolution of 1280x1024 suffers on wrong
timing values:

(II) MTX(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (hsync out of range)


Although this resolution is finally set as default resolution, but in this case
it could be possible that you aren't able to see something on your displays.

What definetly is a problem, is the fact, that the mtx kernel module can't
be loaded on your system:

(WW) MTX(0): Error #4 while loading Kernel Driver.
(WW) MTX(0): Falling back to Emulating DMA


Please check, that the file mtx.ko is available in the directory
/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel and that it can be loaded using the
modprobe command:

If modprobe can't load this module and exits with an error message like

Dooh!! The uname -r gives 2.6.15-27-386

the mtx.ko file is located in /lib/modules/2.6.15-26-386/kernel/drivers/video/mtx.ko and modprobe mtx fails as you illustrated.

As a temporary fix, I will edit the menu.lst to boot the 2.6.15-26-386 kernel image. I guess I must have put in the wrong header files or kernel source when I compiled the Matrox driver. I will check if this works on Monday.
Cool - getting closer to a fix.

This usually happens when your run a system upgrade and the kernel
gets upgraded too. If this is the case, you need to re-run the matroxdriver
installer so that the kernel module gets compiled for the new kernel version
and will copy itself to the correct directory.

Please note: The installation of the matroxdriver has always to be done when
running the target kernel, that means in your case: After the system upgrade
installs a new kernel onto your system, you need to reboot to this new
kernel. Your X server will then startup with the purple Matrox splashscreen
instead of the blue (accelerated) one.

After your X server is running, re-install the Matrox driver and start your
X server again (simply by killing it with CTRL-ALT-Backspace).
When the X server then is respawned by your loginmanager, the blue
splashscreen should be active and everything should be fine again.

Hello again. I have re-run the matroxdriver installer so that the kernel
module gets compiled for the new kernel version. uname -r is 2.6.15-27-386.
The /lib/modules/2.6.15-27-386/kernel/drivers/video/mtx.ko is now present.
modprobe mtx has no result, guess this means it has loaded without problems. I then did a depmod -ae.

As soon as I restarted the machine - the same thing still happens, screen
dies when X Server is initiated. I have attached the latest xorg.conf and
Xorg.0.log. Everything seems fine (to me) in the Xorg.0.log file - no errors
while loading the kernel driver but still cannot get the XServer to start.

Any ideas?

You do still have timing issues.
I don't know why, but mgaHALlib reports that too.
You could try to comment out the VertRefresh and HorizSync settings for your
monitor and let DDC initialize the displays on its own to see if that helps.

Are your displays connected via DVI or HD15(VGA)?

Are the timing values you provided for DVI or HD15 connections?
Some monitors have different timing settings depending on what is used to
connect them to your graphics card.

BTW: Your configuration file is a Quadhead-independent setup, so please
attach all four displays to your system while testing if not already.

The connector is a single to double DVI adapter coming from each
of the two DVI connectors at the back of the Matrox card. The monitors
are all connected to the four DVI connectors via a DVI to HD15 adapter.

I set the timing values for the HD15 connectors - as per the monitor
specifications - hmmm that could be something?. The screens do have
a DVI-D connector as well as a HD15 connector, I am using the HD15
interface on the screens.

I deleted the sections in the xorg.conf specifying the vert refresh
and Horiz sync settings, still no X-video but I did get some very
interesting information included in the resulting Xorg.0.log file,
not quite sure how to interpret all of it. The following values were
found automatically and added to the Xorg.0.log file.

(II) MTX(0): monitor1: Using default hsync range of 30.00-81.00 kHz
(II) MTX(0): monitor1: Using default vrefresh range of 56.00-75.00 Hz

When the X Server fails - a message on the screen flickers between
Analog - Digital and then the power light flickers on and off.

I have added the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log file which might provide some
insight.

PixClock max 140 MHz


According to DDC/EDID, this are the correct timing values for your displays.

The only thing you could try is to add the 'Option "OCC"' to your device
sections like this:

which tries to override the monitor limited max pixel clock to set modes
that may cause troubles with this hardware configuration.

If this doesn't help either, the next thing you could try is to reduce the
resolution/colourdepth values, e.g. starting at 800x600@16bit and work
your way up to the desired resolution and see at what resolution it fails.

No luck I am afraid. Tried everything you mentioned but just don't go. Might have a go with different Linux flavours and versions and see if I can get any success there.

Just seems since the newer version of Xorg that things have stopped working for me. If I put in the very same Xorg.conf file and the respective earlier driver into the previous version of Kubuntu (5.1) - everything works. Thanks for all your help anyway, was very much appreciated.

If this problem is really related to Xorg, then you'll probably only have
luck with older distributions.
And don't try to upgrade this systems then, otherwise you will again get the
new Xorg version, so I don't think that this is really a good solution...

Later on, I'll again have a closer look at your config && logfiles and maybe
I have overseen a tiny detail...
