Cisco VPN Client fails to install

Postby badger4u » Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:37 pm

I have been trying to install a Cisco VPN Client and the installation continues to fail. I have tried to install the following:

- vpnclient-linux-x86_64-4.8.02.0030-k9.tar.gz
- vpnclient-linux-x86_64.4.8.01.0640-k9.tar.gz

Regardless of which installation package I try, the install fails with the following:
************************************************
[root@localhost vpnclient]# ./vpn_install
Cisco Systems VPN Client Version 4.8.02 (0030) Linux Installer
Copyright (C) 1998-2006 Cisco Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

By installing this product you agree that you have read the
license.txt file (The VPN Client license) and will comply with
its terms.

Directory where binaries will be installed [/usr/local/bin]

Automatically start the VPN service at boot time [yes]

In order to build the VPN kernel module, you must have the
kernel headers for the version of the kernel you are running.

Directory containing linux kernel source code [/lib/modules/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5xen/build]

* Binaries will be installed in "/usr/local/bin".
* Modules will be installed in "/lib/modules/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5xen/CiscoVPN".
* The VPN service will be started AUTOMATICALLY at boot time.
* Kernel source from "/lib/modules/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5xen/build" will be used to build the module.

Is the above correct [y]

Making module
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5xen/build SUBDIRS=/root/Desktop/Library/VPN Client/vpnclient modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5-xen-i686'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `Client/vpnclient'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-128.1.1.el5-xen-i686'
make: *** [default] Error 2
Failed to make module "cisco_ipsec.ko".
**************************************************************

I have also tried copying the patch file that I found listed into the 'vpnclient' directory and installing the patch prior to the vpnclient install. I get the following message when trying to install the patch:
**************************************************************
[root@localhost vpnclient]# patch <../vpnclient-linux-2.6.22.diff
bash: ../vpnclient-linux-2.6.22.diff: No such file or directory
*************************************************************

The output of uname -a is as follows:
************************************************************
Linux localhost 2.6.18-128.1.1.el5xen #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 14:34:58 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
***********************************************************

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

The installer has problems with spaces in file- and directory names and the directory where you saved the file is:

Code: Select all
/root/Desktop/Library/VPN Client/vpnclient modules

That's the reason for it failing to install on your system.
Make sure that the directory does not contain spaces (replace them by underscores or the like).

Thanks. That worked like a champ. Next time, I need to remember to look at the simple things first.

I am still very new with Linux and would prefer to use a GUI for the VPN as opposed to command line. Any recommendations?

You're welcome.
Well, AFAIK, there are only two GUIs for the Cisco VPN client available, see this topic in here:

After figuring out the command line options, I think I will just stick with that. Was easy enough and I don't need to install anything else.

Thanks again.

Well, actually, it's not that complicated anyway.

Is this issue resolved now and may I close this topic?
