Installation and performance of G450 (G550) on Ubuntu 9.04

Postby heraldo » Wed Jul 29, 2009 12:56 pm

Hi,

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a PC with G550 video card. The CPU is P4 2GHz, 1Gb RAM, etc. I do see the desktop and it works, but the video performance is extremely poor. For example, I youtube videos do not run smoothly, and glxgears gives me only 40 FPS. I did not install any specific drivers for this card, partly because it does not seem trivial to me how to do so. Trying to install drivers from this site gives this output (after one RETURN and one Y):
========================================
Matrox Linux Driver Install Script
========================================

Can't find the X Server version you are currently running (1.6.0) in
this installers database, so for your convenience, I'll try to install
the latest available version (7.1.0) onto your system.

If you think this is alright, simply hit <RETURN> here, if you don't,
stop here by pressing CTRL-C and please post this notice in the
Unofficial Matrox Technical Support Forum (http://matrox.tuxx-home.at)
and I'll see what I can do for you.

Please strike any key to continue...
You are about to install the X server driver,
do you wish to continue? (y/n) y

An X driver exists. Not overwriting... use -overwrite to override)

Installed X HAL driver is the same as the installer
version, not installing HAL driver file.

Also my /etc/X11/xorg.conf only contains this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Please advise on how/if it is possible to improve the performance of the card.

Thanks in advance. I believe many Ubuntu users will appreciate a clear explanation (could not find it so far on this forum, could be due to the flood of porn-spam?)
