Strange changes after Update from Debian Lenny to Squeeze

Postby AndreasMeier » Fri May 15, 2009 11:11 am

Hi there,

since 2007 my system was running with Debian Etch very fine. I have a Matrox G550 card and your driver was working very fine with my dual monitor setup.
But since Etch was a little bit old, and I found software under Squeeze which I really in need of, I decided to upgrade.
First step was from Etch to Lenny, and after that from Lenny to Squeeze.
Before I started, I saved my xorg.conf and included a very simple one with vesa-drivers for easy running.

Upgrade was finished and I wanted to have my xorg-config back. Re-installed the driver with overwrite-option after removing the xserver-xorg-video-mga-package.
Then restored my xorg.conf and both displays were working again.
Thank you again for the driver and your work here, really appreciate it.

But now I have a question:
With the old version of the xserver (which I forgot), all applications were aware of the virtual border between both monitors.
When I maximized a window of an app, the app maximized over ONE monitor.

Now, when I do the same, the app maximizes over BOTH monitors.
I'm using the same xorg.conf as on the old installtion.

Can anyone of you tell me, what changed with the xserver and how I can restore the awareness of this virtuell border ?

Here is my xorg.conf:

I have no idea, since you have Xinerama properly enabled, your config file looks good.
If you could attach your logfile, I may be able to see something in there.

Another thing you might want to try is the fake-xinerama extension, don't know if this still works for recent X server, but it's worth a try.

We talked about that here a long time ago:

Thanx for your answer, sorry that I answer so late.
Currently a backup job is running, but I will attach the logfile later.
After the backup has finished, I will update to KDE 4.2.
Hope, that all works well.

So, the status is as follows:
Maximizing the app is now working again. Is will be maximized to the full screen of 1 monitor as needed.

The only thing, what is not working after the KDE4.2-Update is, that the application starts on that monitor where the cursor is positioned.
That was very helpful in the past on a dual screen config.

Can anyone of you help me, how to set that up ?

Many thanks,
regards
Andreas
