MD5 checksum error

Postby last.cowboy » Sun Mar 15, 2009 4:03 pm

I want to test the "unofficial matrox linux driver" on my Suse 11.1 to see whether it provides more 3D functionality (e.g. desktop effects, etc.). I followed the steps described in the howto but the installation script stopped at the very beginning with an MD5 checksum error. Downloading with Firefox and also with Konqueror did not report any errors.
Here are the shell messages:

You need to be root to install the driver or run 'make cloneconfig'.

I don't know if SuSE follows the current sudo hype, but if it does, try again and prepend the command 'sudo' before all the above mentioned commands, e.g.: 'sudo make cloneconfig'.

Otherwise, issue 'su -', then type in your root password when prompted and run the above given commands again with root privileges.

I did all that while being logged in as root - but I'll try again using "sudo"...

"Sudo" doesn't help.
And just to show: The MD5 error occurs while being logged in as root.

Oh, OK, sorry, I was overwhelmed by the tons of error messages you got while executing the installer script.
It seems as if you're missing the "/usr/bin/tr" command, which is needed by the installer. Well, tr is part of the coreutils package on Debian so I don't know what the name of this package is for OpenSUSE, but, you're definetely missing some core functionalities in your system.

Another thing that's really strange is the output from your first posting:

Code: Select all
/usr/bin/tail: Keine Berechtigung

Can you post the output of the command `ls -l /usr/bin/tail`, please?

WTF?
It seems as if there's some serious problem with your /usr/bin directory. I guess that most of the files in there aren't executable. In this specific case, please fix it by running the following command:

Code: Select all
chmod 755 /usr/bin/tail

Usually, all files in /usr/bin should be executable, so it would be possible to simply run

Code: Select all
chmod a+x /usr/bin/*

to fix all permission issues in this directory if more file are affected.

The rule of thumb is, that "all" files in /usr/bin, /bin, /usr/sbin and /sbin should be executable.
So if there are any files in these four directories on your system that do not look like:

Code: Select all
rwxr-xr-x    ....

you need to fix that before continuing.
I don't know how that could happen to your system, but I'm fascinated that it still works. Don't reboot until you fixed that, chances are high that your system won't come up anymore.

Regarding your post about /usr/bin/tr being a directory: WTF²?
What happened to your system?

Are you sure that everything is alright with this system?

Well, so far everything runs...
I just checked the directories, in /bin, /sbin and /usr/sbin all files are executable, in /usr/bin most are also - but not all. Whyever...
I'll change all to executable and try another run.

Same files, different errors:

/usr/src/linux-2.6.27.19-3.2/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 25: /usr/bin/tail: cannot execute binary file
/usr/src/linux-2.6.27.19-3.2/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 26: /usr/bin/tail: cannot execute binary file
CHK include/linux/version.h
CHK include/linux/utsrelease.h
CALL scripts/checksyscalls.sh
bigboss:/usr/src/linux #

It seems those files are not supposed to be executable...

Yes, that's a good idea. And then, there's still the "tr" issue which needs to be taken care of.

According to packages.debian.org, the files you have in /usr/bin/tr should usually be in /usr/share/texmf-texlive/fonts/tfm/public/tengwarscript/.
Does this directory exist on your system?

Regarding your latest error message:
Can you please post the output of the command `file /usr/bin/tail`?

Your pc is messed up. Something with the texmf setup has gone completely wrong. tail is an essential tool used by many scripts, as well as tr is.
If I would be in front of this system, I could fix that, without being in front of the system it's really hard to do that.

A few options for you:
* Reinstall your operating system
* try to reinstall most of the core packages, like coreutils, binutils, etc. in the hope that things get fixed then
* Do some googling on the error messages you got, maybe it's a known problem with OpenSUSE and someone already posted a howto about how to fix that issue.

It seems the texlive installation went somehow wrong (I did that a few days after the system installation using the standard yast routines) - the messed up files in /usr/bin are somehow related to texlive now...

/usr/bin/touch was also one of the not executable files

bigboss:/usr/src/linux # file /usr/bin/touch
/usr/bin/touch: TeX font metric data (FontSpecific)

/usr/bin/sort is also a directory with some tfm-files in it

bigboss:/usr/src/linux # l /usr/bin/sort/

-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 912 Jan 9 2006 stmary8.tfm
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 912 Jan 9 2006 stmary9.tfm

I guess I have to reinstall my system...

Thanks for your help.
