Matrox G450 - Can't use 32 bit color at 1680 x 1050

Postby Reesy » Sat May 31, 2008 3:13 pm

Hi there,

Sorry, I know this is a Linux forum but I'm stuck and I'm sure you guys will be able to shed some light on this problem. I am currently using a Matrox Millennium G450 dual head display adapter with a WSXGA (1680 x 1050) LCD monitor on Windows XP.

Using 32 bit color quality at lower resolutions such as 1280 x 768 is no problem, but when I increase to the monitor's native 1680 x 1050 resolution, I am only able to use 16 bit color. This results in icons looking all jagged as well as severe banding in my display.

If I try to change the settings to 32 bit color in Display Properties >> Settings >> Color Quality the screen resolution slider automatically drops from 1680 x 1050 down to a lower value.

I used the Matrox Tech Support Tweak Utility (MTSTU) to create the 1680 x 1050 setting as it wasn't available by default. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem, could it be that the G450 doesn't support WSXGA with 32 bit color?

Any advice would be appreciated here.

Cheers
Peter

Using 32 bit color quality at lower resolutions such as 1280 x 768 is no problem

1280*768*32/1024/1024 = 30MB Video memory

If I try to change the settings to 32 bit color in Display Properties >> Settings >> Color Quality the screen resolution slider automatically drops from 1680 x 1050 down to a lower value.

1680*1050*32/1024/1024 = 53,8MB Video memory

How much video memory does your card have?

It's only a 32MB card, thanks for outlining that so clearly. I guess it's time to upgrade eh?

If you want to use this resolution at this colour depth: Yes :)

Some things to mention:

I made a stupid mistake in my calculations above. I forgot to divide the result by 8 (making bytes out of bits) and so the results don't seem that clear anymore.
Basically, 1680x1050@32bpp should be supported with 16MiB of VideoRam per head on linux, but I don't know for Windows.

Reesy asked me to add the following information he found out:

Reesy wrote:So the 32MB of video memory on the card isn't enough to deliver 32 bit colour depth on 2 screens at 1680 x 1050 resolution.

However, since I'm currently only using 1 display, I have been able to divert some of the juice from the secondary display by going to:

Display Properties >> Advanced >> Dual Head >> Advanced Settings >> Display Capabilities >> Change Settings

This brings up a slider which you can use to adjust the ratio of memory used between the two heads and voila! 32 bit colour depth at WSXGA resolution (on 1 display).
